Proboscis monkeys among the attractions at Klias


KOTA KINABALU: The Klias Wetlands, located about 100km south of the state capital, lies within easy reach of those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Visitors will be rewarded by spectacular sightings of the elusive proboscis monkeys, nicknamed the ‘Dutchman of Borneo’ and now listed as an endangered species.

Proboscis monkeys, endemic to the island of Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan) dominate the trees on both sides of the Klias river.

The wetlands, covering an area of 130,000ha, is one of few spots in Sabah where one can view these creatures, numbering a few thousand, in the wild.
