Masters of Sape to open for Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival 2011

KUCHING: The Rainforest World Music Festival’s (RWMF) genesis began in 1997 when a band of Sarawakian musicians and dancers travelled to Marseille to perform before professionals of the music industry.

Hardened European agents, managers and festival directors were brought to tears at the sights and sounds of their hauntingly beautiful performances, which included Asang Lawai and Tegit Asat on the traditional sape boat lute.

Fourteen years later, the foremost ‘Masters of the Sape’, Asang and Tegit will be back on the RWMF stage
as the opening act of the annual festival, accompanied by Mathew Ngau Jau who has toured the world representing Sarawak as an artist dancer and musician.

The 14th Rainforest World Music Festival is all set for this weekend.

This three-day inspiring musical and cultural celebration of contemporary and traditional world music will begin this Friday.

Besides evening performances on the main stage, there are afternoon workshops, lectures, jam sessions and smaller concerts.
