World Harvest Festival to feature Iban legend

KUCHING: ‘The Adventures of Keling and Kumang’ will be the theme play for this year’s World Harvest Festival (WHF).

The play introduces the legendary Keling as the hero who finds his true love in Kumang after enduring and overcoming challenging feats.

Based on an Iban legend, the scenes will be enlivened with theatrical effects in a natural outdoor setting fronting a lake.

The Miss World Harvest Festival 2012 Ethnic Beauty Pageant will feature participants in colourful traditional Iban costumes, while the Ironman World Harvest Festival 2012 competition will see 15 finalists demonstrate their skills and strength through events such as lifting 50kg gunnysacks, climbing Mount Santubong, blowpipe shooting, coconut de-husking with bare hands and other traditional-based activities.

There will also be a Dayak Ethnic Food Festival which gives visitors the opportunity to try interesting Sarawakian indigenous food.

The two-day one-night event is a colourful and vibrant prelude to the statewide Gawai Dayak celebration in June.

WHF 2012, to be held on May 26-27, is organised by the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) and supported by the Ministry of Tourism.
