Drums roll at Borneo Cultural Festival

SIBU: Traditional drums took centre stage at the Borneo Cultural Festival, summoning the community to gather for the past 10 days.

At the opening at the Chinese cultural stage two Fridays ago, 24 drums, signifying the seasons of the year, summoned people to the colourful celebration.

And when the festival closed last Sunday, the 24 drums once again rolled for the people to march forward, communities sharing their life in the Rajang River Basin.

Executive secretary of Sibu United Chinese Association Hiing Mee Giong said: “In Malaysian harmony, we unite in spirit to look forward to the next celebration; looking forward to living together.”

Hiing said the aim of the celebration was achieved as people lived up to the theme ‘Beauty in Ethnic Diversity’.

Host Sibu Municipal Council also considered the festival a success. Its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King said: “The people love the festival. The night before the closing, a crowd of 140,000 thronged Sibu Town Square.”

The beats of traditional drums herald the coming together of the Chinese, Dayaks and Malay-Melaunau — dancing and singing.
