Gaya Street gets upgrade

NEW LOOK: Work in progress to create space for pedestrians, parking bays, for weekly open market

KOTA KINABALU: The vibrant Gaya Street, often described as the "Heart of the City", will  soon take on a new look.

Work to remove the road divider to create more space for pedestrians and parking bays on the street famous for its weekly open market known as the "Gaya Sunday Street Fair", has begun.

Likas Kapitan Cina or Chinese Community leader Chin Teck Ming yesterday said the interlocking bricks laid on the divider had, over the years, become uprooted by tree roots.

"This was a hazard for pedestrians who could trip easily because of the uneven surface on this busy street," Chin said, adding that the location was also the financial hub for the state capital.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai, who is also Api-Api assemblyman, recently visited the site together with Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir and Chin and several officers from City Hall.

Yee had said the upgrading works were timely given its location and the popularity of the weekly street fair that was patronised not only by locals, but also foreign tourists.
