Sarawakians should preserve originality of ethnic dances

KUCHING: Sarawakians should preserve the originality of their ethnic dances, said Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

Ethnic dances ought to be showcased in its original form instead of in a modernised form or influenced by other cultures.

“We have several ethnic dances and music of our own. Let us keep this as original as possible, otherwise it will be lost in time,” he said at the Lombok-Sasambo cultural dance peformance in Kampung Santubong yesterday.

Wan Junaidi, who is also Santubong MP, said minor variations might be alright to make dance routine more dynamic and lively but never at the expense of originality.

Touching on the performance by an ethnic dance troupe from Indonesia, Wan Junaidi hailed their original form and said it is important for both countries to know and help each other to promote their cultures.
