LUBOK ANTU: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud made a two-day visit to Kasai, Sg Lalang, Lubok Antu on Monday to kick-start the implementation of a Strategic Plan of Action that covers the five pillars of the Heart of Borneo.
The Heart of Borneo Initiative (HoB) is a key supplementary element of the state’s push for sustainable development, safeguarding the last expanse of contiguous forest in the region.
The HoB covers 2.1 million hectares over a contiguous block along the state’s boundaries with Kalimantan and with Sabah and Brunei.
The five pillars comprise sustainable forest management, ecotourism based on culture, adventure and nature (CAN), conservation of biological diversity, sustainable agriculture and land use and community based/rural poverty eradication programme.
Coincidently, Nanga Sumpa and Nanga Delok and Ulu Engkari, Batang Ai fall under the HoB map.
The state Forest Department as the implementer of the Heart of Borneo Initiative has been the key authority over the management, conservation and protection of natural forests in Sarawak.
Upon arrival, Taib accompanied by his wife Puan Sri Raghad Kurdi Taib, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu and other members of the entourage made a 1.2km (about 1 hour 30 minutes) walk through a jungle trek at Kasai trail and then proceeded in a 10-minute boat ride to Enseluai Waterfall, Sg Delok from Ng. Lalang.
The Kasai trail which is in the Ulu Menyang landscape will be the first High Conservation Value Forest (HCVF) for orang-utans natural habitat within HoB area.
The group later stopped at Ng Sumpa to release some 10,000 fish fry of Empurau and Semah species at the Delok river which is one of the tourist hot spots before visiting Rh Ngumbang, a 35-door longhouse.
