Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and River Adventures

This entry says Sandakan, but this was just the landing point of our flight from Kota Kinabalu.

Tomorrow's entry will show the approximate location of our river lodge.

Ever since the strong earthquake on Mt. Kinabalu, the mountain has been shrouded in clouds.

This morning the skies clear, and we have a stunning view of it from the airport as we are preparing to depart Kota Kinabalu at dawn for a 40 minute flight to the town of Sandakan.

Upon arrival we transfer immediately to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary where orphans or injured animals rescued from the wild are nursed to health and trained to survive on their own.

There is a 10am feeding where we get great views of several adults and one mother with her baby.

There is also a nursery for very young orangutan.

They have a jungle gym, and the babies are being taught how to climb and feed by some older ones.

We also visit a Sun Bear rehabilitation center where we get a look at these amazing creatures with black fur.

How they withstand the heat is beyond me.
