Traveling Moxburys: Kuching Intro – Borneo, Malaysia

Book a room in a budget hostel above a karaoke night club…what could possibly go wrong?!

It’s just gone 4am and the window next to the bed is vibrating to the sound of the thumping bass from downstairs.

Even the air con unit above the bed seems to be wanting in on the action.

I liked to party hard in my younger days (still do on the rare occasion), but trying to sing at 4am was never my strong point and nor should it be anyone’s!

Yesterday was a travel day and we were up at 5.30am ready to catch our flight from Penang Airport to Kuching (capital of Sarawak state in Borneo).

We actually got up at 5.39 as the alarm didn’t wake us for whatever reason, but fortunately I woke up anyway, and then the hotel staff called us at 5.45 to tell us that our cab had arrived.

Not the best start to the day but at least we made the flight at 7am and landed in Kuching 2 hours later. Air Asia – no dramas.

We were met at the airport by the owners of ‘Woodpecker Lodge’ where we stayed last night (60 myr/$20 cdn).

The nicest couple you’ll ever meet.

They run a 30+ room hostel by themselves and yet still found the time to pick us up from the airport (25 myr).
